The Hours and Times

"Weak"

The Hours and Times Review

Ever wondered what might have happened when John Lennon and his manager Brian Epstein spent four days together in Barcelona, just before the Beatles hit it big?

Me neither.

But someone must care, otherwise they wouldn't have taken Christopher Münch's trifling bit of historical fiction and released it on DVD 11 years later, would they? So for both of you who are still living through Beatlemania, here's your chance to keep that high going for another hour.

Literally: At 60 minutes in length, this low, low, low-budget flick is a wisp of a movie yet feels far too long. These "what if?" scenarios tend to be fun for about eight minutes -- and sure enough, The Hours and Times is plenty fun until John (Ian Hart) and Brian (David Angus) start making passes at each other and flirting with every man and woman they encounter. There's not much more to the movie than Münch's fantastical and sexually-focused reinterpretation of the past.

The DVD adds commentary (woo hoo!) and a 22-minute making-of featurette to a pretty thin package. Münch himself is unfortunately no more interesting than his fictions -- including the equally dismal Sleepy Time Gal and Color of a Brisk and Leaping Day.

The sole point of interest here is Ian Hart as John Lennon, who would land his breakout role two years later in Backbeat, playing -- who else -- John Lennon. I guess that goes to show how donning an atrocious wig and reading from a poor script can actually be good for your career.
