The Future of Food Review

I admit that I like to think that science will cure what ails us, and I haven't really thought much about genetically modified foods and the potential dangers they might hold. Swap a gene here and there? That kind of thing could happen through random mutation, I figure. Deborah Koons' The Future of Food is eye-opening, if overly preachy, and I'm not afraid to cautiously recommend it. Sift through the propoganda about Big Industry controlling what we eat (and Wal-Mart, too!) and the lectures about government subsidies (I don't like 'em either, but what can you do), and you'll find some interesting science about how GM food has made people ill, and how companies like Monsanto are strongarming the world into using their evil seeds. Unfortunately, the narration is pedantic in a storytime way and the "film" is largely composed of stock footage dredged from old newsreels. The few talking heads aren't very compelling, and the most interesting perspective comes from a self-taped video of one farmer, sued by Monsanto, which he recorded while sitting in his truck, which needless to say doesn't do much for the film's credibility.
