Sex and Breakfast

"Weak"

Sex and Breakfast Review

Yes, I know he's 28 years old now, but I'm just still not ready to accept Macaulay Culkin as a sexual being, much less deal with him as the star of a sex drama like Sex and Breakfast.

The task would be easier if the film had more going for it. Miles Brandman writes and directs this story of two young couples who find their relationships flagging, and who both decide that the way to patch things up is to sleep with other people. Why, of course!

Our two couples are as follows: James and Heather (Culkin and Alexis Dziena, who looks like she's a teenager) have no known jobs or ambitions, and Ellis and Renee (Kuno Becker and Eliza Dushku), who also have no known jobs or ambitions. But they are willing to go to a strange therapy seminar hosted by Dr. Wellbridge (Joanna Miles), which is followed by a more intimate session with her. "Therapy" may be the wrong word. They actually go to the good doctor to tell her they want to have sex with other people, and Wellbridge says OK. Wellbridge's job is apparently to hook up clients with each other and provide an apartment for them to have sex in. Think of her as an upscale pimp.

The premise might be an interesting spark for a movie if there was anything more to it at all. But there's not: Sex and Breakfast features a nearly endless series of vapid, yammering, go-nowhere conversations and throwaway sequences that lead up to the inevitable hookup when these two couples decide to swap partners for a night. You know it's coming, but it takes a good hour of Culkin moping and cracking awkward jokes and Becker slipping in and out of a Latino accent before it happens. The whole while, we're left to ponder what any of these people see in the others.

And lest you're curious about the title: There is actually more time given to breakfast in the film than to sex. Chew on that one before you break out your rental card.
