Pizzicata Review

Beware the foreign film that has trouble finding distribution in its native country...

Pizzicata's provocative title may have you longing alternately for a jaunt to the Italian countryside or, well, maybe just a pizza, but either way you're going to be disappointed.

It starts with promise: an Italian-American pilot is downed over a small Italian village during World War II. Barely surviving the crash, he is adopted by a farmer (with three lovely daughters, natch) and is nursed back to health. Soon enough he's back on his feet, speaking perfect Italian, masquerading as a cousin, and falling in love with one of the ladies, who loves to dance. Alas, there's trouble -- another suitor who gets jealous of this cousin/lover. Romeo and Juliet were Italian, too, no?

Lazy and spare, with very little dialogue, Pizzicata hopes you'll become so entranced with its dance numbers and oddball photography that you won't fall asleep during the rest of the picture. No such luck; while the dancing is quite provocative it amounts to little more than a history lesson on the idiosyncrasies of rustic Italian dance numbers. There aren't even many Bertolucci-esque vistas of the Italian countryside to ogle while you're waiting for the plot to kick in.

Which, needless to say, doesn't happen anyway.
