Nuyorican Dream

"Good"

Nuyorican Dream Review

Following the plight of one family over five years, this TV documentary pulls few punches in showing the daily struggles of Puerto Ricans living in New York (aka Nuyoricans). Told through the eyes of the one son "who turned out good" in a large Nuyorican family, the vicious cycle of drugs (crack and heroin), crime, incarceration, and disease is laid out in all its ugly glory, all while the family's matriarch does the one thing she knows how: cook. Unfortunately, director Laurie Collyer is a bit quick to blame "the system" (and especially the justice system) for the problems of the family, absolving them of personal responsibility and putting the essentially hands-off mother on a pedestal. And while Collyer's technique leaves a lot to be desired (spending many a frame watching children play or freeze-framing on family photos), this is still a touching and eye-opening film.

A little dream.
