Make a Wish Review

If I could make a wish, it probably wouldn't be for the production of more independent horror films in the U.S. Already, the formula's become too obvious and redundant: Take all your friends into the middle of nowhere, shoot the whole film outside (so you don't need complicated lighting setups), and bring lots of fake blood. For a story, just let loose a serial killer and start counting bodies until one is left. Throw in a twist at the end if you're so inclined.

Here's the spin of Make a Wish: The campers in question are all former lovers of Susan (Moynan King), and they're all lesbians.

Now you can sign me up for a lesbian slasher flick any day of the week, but Make a Wish just isn't made with enough skill -- or apparently much care at all -- to justify sitting through the whole thing. The slayings come like clockwork, and none are very inventive -- in fact, most of them happen off camera due to effects limitations and to hide the killer's identity. Instead, the girls largely just show up hanging from trees or impaled with crossbow bolts.

There are a few flashes of good acting, one interesting death scene involving a tent that becomes a sort of cocoon for the victim, and a good amount of (I guess) insider lesbian humor. This doesn't come close to carrying the picture, but as indie horror flicks go, this one's far from scraping the bottom of the barrel.
