In the Dust of the Stars Review

With characters named Xik and Thob, In the Dust of the Stars doesn't even pretend to be grounded in the real world unlike many of the DEFA films, produced behind the Iron Curtain in East Germany: It's a futuristic fantasy, deeply blended with shades of faaaar-out Barbarella. So much of Stars is flecked with creepy sexuality -- love scenes, showers, and exotic dancing, all in space! -- but it's so absurdly funny that you'll totally forget there's a plot attached to all of this. That's even further out there: Our heroes travel for six years in space because a planet sent a distress call. When they get there, everyone says everything is fine! Oh snap! Turns out there's some shenanigans going on underground, but who cares. Bring on the techno rave!

Aka Im Staub der Sterne.
