Freaks, Glam Gods and Rockstars Review


Is glam rock dead? And how.

The procession of New York musicians on display in this independent documentary -- bands with names like Boob!, Toilet Boys, Dgeneration, and The Voluptuous Horror of Karen Black -- are almost unilaterally bad or awful. In face, for a movie at least one-third about "glam gods," it's a surprise that the film presents itself as a screeching nightmare that bears no resemblance to Ziggy Stardust in any incarnation.

It's one of those films that feels far longer than its 86 minutes running time. Alternating between concert footage with dozens of bands and candid interviews with their members, the subjects are self-congratulatory, going on and on about the virtues of drag queens (which comprise the bulk of the film's stars) when not busy delivering raunchy stage material.

Drag queens are supposed to be proud, of course, but the film is remarkably hollow when it comes to its subject matter. Ultimately, I'm not sure what the point of the movie is at all -- there are no insights into music and few into the scene's cultural history. Lifelong New Yorkers might find its anecdotes amusing, but even those viewers will have to be really in to the alt-glam-drag musical history.

On a side note, this is one of the first recently-produced, New York-based films I've seen in the post-WTC disaster era. It's surreal to hear the near-constant complaints about the city, comments you wouldn't hear at all any more. I wouldn't say it's inappropriate, but it does serve as a reminder how quickly things can change.
