Detour Review

Surprisingly fun, this independent update of the psychos-in-the-desert story -- as seen originally in The Texas Chain Saw Massacre -- has plenty of gore and memorable characters as well.

This time out, our heroes are a group of ravers in search of the best peyote in the land. Though warned of evil things in the desert, they take their RV off-road anyway, eventually getting it hopelessly stuck. What follows is the usual cat-and-mouse, hunt-or-be-hunted horror game, with psychotic lunatics hunting them down one by one... presumably they've been taking the peyote the teenagers are after.

Some of the acting is great, some is only so-so, but director Steven Taylor keeps things jumping well enough so that you don't really mind, and the copious tube tops will distract you even if you do. The beginning and the end of the film are unfortunate weak spots -- the start drags, the finale doesn't make much sense. The middle of course is all gore, with hook-handed freaks, flesh eating monster-men, and screaming starlets all praying for their big break. What a refreshing break from B-list girls doing horror to make a buck... these kids are really into the production, having fun, and working their hearts out (never mind that some of them don't quite have the talent to pull it off). Watch especially for Aaron Buer's hysterical faux urban hipster. Gotta love it!

Aka Hell's Highway.
