Bloody Territories Review

It's Japanese gangster high jinks galore -- the kind we've come desensitized to in recent years, as a flood of these movies have hit video shelves following America's recent obsession with all things bloody and all things Japanese.

With a name like Bloody Territories you may expect a Miike-styled splatterfest, with blood squirting as if from a fire hose and yakuza slip-sliding in the stuff around Tokyo. But back in 1969, when Bloody Territories was made, no one went that far, not even Yasuharu Hasebe, a pioneer in the genre.

This extremely simplistic story sounds familiar from the get-go: A Japanese crime organization is disbanding due to pressure from the cops, but a small gang of renegades don't want to go along. They storm out of the meeting and start their own gang, but first they've got to earn the respect of the locals, which they do through a blood feud. Films like this are legion, and even though Territories is an early entry into the field, it's a weak one. We never care much about the bad guys or the good guys -- not that there are any good guys, really -- and it all feels too fundamentally familiar; especially since none of the characters is notably different than any of the others.

Genre fans will want to check it out; casual viewers can give it a pass.

Aka Arakure.
