Barberland

Barberland Review

If A.D. and Robert Liano are to be trusted, barbers aren't just guys that cut your hair. They're so wound up in the fabric of Americana that, if they were to disappear, the very universe in which we reside will be torn asunder. Culture will die. People will forget the English language. Blood will rain from the sky.

Put aside the overwrought thematics and the doomsaying and you'll find a brief, interesting look at the barber, a dying profession that merits at least a bit of your time and attention. Barberland interviews over a dozen working barbers to tell us the origins of the profession (leeches, surgeons, all that jazz), then segues into the heyday of barbers as social hubs and masters of hair. The decline of the profession began, we discover, during the hippie era, when men started visiting women's salons to get their long tresses trimmed. Today, the barber is a vanishing breed that, we discover, could entirely vanish in 20 to 30 years. (Rest assured, there are academic types with breathless predictions waiting in the wings after the grizzled old barbers are done with their spiel.)

While Barberland has its share of interesting codgers with fun stories along the lines of lopping guys' ears off by accident, there are really not many insights to be found within its 60 minutes. Even one of the San Francisco barbers, bemoaning how there are only two other barber shops in the entire town, somehow misses the downtown shop where I got my haircut for many years and which has been open (and busy) forever.

It's not a big thing, but it kind of makes you wonder whether the movie's overt histrionics are genuine.
