Cape Verdean singer Fernando Quejas has died in a Portuguese hospital on Friday (28OCT05). He was 83.

The singer/songwriter, who moved from the west African island nation of Cape Verde to Portugal in 1947, died of undisclosed causes in a Lisbon hospital.

During the 1950s Quejas recorded 22 albums for Portuguese record label Alvorada, before touring the world in the 1960s and 1970s.

Quejas was one of the founders of the island's first radio station Radio Clube de Cabo Verde (Radio Praia) in 1945.
