The 57-year-old, who appeared as himself in the films Zoolander and Dude, Where's My Car?, was one of more than 6,000 people from other countries who took the Oath of Allegiance together at the Los Angeles Convention Center.

Fabio, full name Fabio Lanzoni, said he was "proud to be an American" and thanked U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services officials for granting him citizenship in the "the greatest country on earth".

He said in a statement, "This is one of the happiest days of my life... There is no such thing as an Italian dream or an English dream but the American dream is alive and well. Each day people look to come to this country to seek a better life for themselves and their family. That was my dream and my thanks to the USCIS for helping turn that dream into a reality."

Fabio became a cultural phenomenon in the 1990s and is best known as a cover model for romance novels and his I Can't Believe It's Not Butter commercials.
