In the latest Evolution towards TV-Internet convergence, Panasonic said on Tuesday that buyers of its new Blu-ray Disc players will be able to make and receive audio and video phone calls through it using the Skype platform. (In addition to the player, users must purchase a $99 camera that attaches to it if they wish to use it as a video phone.) The player's remote includes a Skype button, personalized ring tones, and voicemail that is recorded onto an SD card inside the remote. The new player with Skype, said Richard Simone, director of Panasonic's entertainment group, is designed to "allow consumers to easily personalize their entertainment experience to fit their lifestyle."
