Eva Mendes originally rejected the script for new movie WE OWN THE NIGHT - but eagerly snapped up the role when Joaquin Phoenix signed up for the lead. The 32-year-old actress is desperate to avoid being typecast as the love interest in movies, so she snubbed the part - but her thinking was soon altered when her "dream co-star" joined the cast. She says, "Actually I said no for a year, because I'm a complete idiot. I have a 'no' reflex that I've learned just doesn't work for me. I first read the script (director) James Gray gave me and I thought, 'I don't want to play the girlfriend role.' He came back to me six months later, the role was a little better, but I was like, 'No, no, no.' "Then a year later he came back with a more enhanced role and said, 'Joaquin Phoenix is definitely playing the role of Bobby.' So I go, 'Well, maybe...'"
