Will The UK Still Be Able To Take Part In The Eurovision After Brexit?

On Friday (June 24) Britain voted to leave the EU in a historic referendum result. The decision to leave the EU has thrown up a lot of questions for the British public, but for some, the worry that we may no longer be able to compete in the Eurovision Song Contest is top of their list.

But Eurovision fans have nothing to worry about, we will of course still be able to enter after Brexit. On Friday many fans took to Twitter to voice their concerns, but the contest’s official account was quick to give assurances, tweeting: ‘British referendum outcome doesn't impact @Eurovision presence of the UK. @BBCEurovision, be welcome next year!’

US singer Justin Timberlake performed at the interval of the Eurovision Song Contest in Stockholm on Saturday evening, as the votes were being counted for the 26 acts. The singer performed 2003 hit ‘Rock Your Body’, followed by new single ‘Can't Stop the Feeling’, from the upcoming musical comedy Trolls.

Taking to the stage at the Globe Arena, Timberlake said: "To all of you, I know what it's like to perform a song for the first time in front of millions of people, so I know you must have been nervous tonight. You all represented your countries so very well and you must be so very proud. Cheers to you. I'm now nervous myself!”

Justin Timberlake Eurovision Song Contest

Nine-time Grammy Award winner Justin Timberlake is to perform during the Eurovision Song Contest at the weekend, where he’ll play his brand new song ‘Can’t Stop the Feeling’ for the very first time.

The 35 year old American superstar will perform the track, which he unveiled just a matter of days ago as the first single from his forthcoming score to the DreamWorks animated movie Trolls, during the interval at the 2016 Eurovision finals on Saturday night (May 14th).

Romania Kicked Out Of Eurovision Song Contest Over Unpaid Broadcaster Debts

Romania has been shockingly kicked out of this year’s Eurovision Song Contest after its public service broadcaster failed to pay outstanding debts dating back to 2007. The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) claim that Romania’s Televiziunea Romana (TVR) owes then over £14 million and has so far failed to make satisfactory arrangements to repay the debt.

Eurovision Chief Blames Terry Wogan For Britain Not Taking Contest Seriously

Christer Bjorkman, the producer of this year’s Eurovision Song Contest has hit out at the late Terry Wogan, blaming the presenter for ruining the British public’s attitude towards the annual competition. Bjorkman said that Wogan’s ‘mocking’ commentary, which he provided on the BBC for 28 years, meant that the contest could never be taken seriously in the UK.

Appearing in London, Bjorkman was asked why he thought the contest was seen as frivolous in the UK. “There are several reasons, one is Terry Wogan himself,” Bjorkman said (via The Mirror). "He did this for 28 years and his ­commentary always forced the mockery side and there is a grown-up generation in Britain that doesn’t know anything better.”

Eurovision Song Contest Announces Significant Changes To Voting System

The Eurovision Song Contest has announced a significant overhaul of its voting system for the first time in over four decades, in a move that they hope will result in “TV magic”.

On Thursday (February 18th), the Eurovision organisers announced that the upcoming competition in Stockholm, Sweden, on Saturday May 14th will see the start of a new scoring system. In previous years, the results of professional juries and viewers have been presented as a combined result from each country in the famous 'douze points' format.

BBC Will Let Public Pick The UK Entry For 2016 'Eurovision Song Contest'

After years of Eurovision disappointment, the BBC are hoping the UK can do better next year, by handing the decision of who will represent the country back to the public. The UK’s Eurovision entry had always been chosen by the public until 2011, when a ‘panel of experts’ were brought in by the Beeb to make the decision.

Last year Electro Velvet were chosen with the song ‘Still In Love With You’, which earned an embarrassing five points and saw the UK finish fourth from last. The biggest success the UK has had in recent years was back in 2009 when Jade Ewen finished fifth with ‘It’s My Time’. Ewen won the right to represent the UK through BBC show ‘Eurovision: Your Country Needs You’.

Austrian drag queen Conchita Wurst stole the show at this year’s Eurovision. Winning by a mile she managed to overcome controversy and triumph thanks to her mesmerising performance of ‘Rise Like A Phoenix’. But who is the Austrian sensation who first gained famed as Thomas Neuwirth?

Conchita Wurst is the alter ego of Thomas Neuwirth, a 25 year old Austrian singer born in the small town of Gumden. Neuwirth’s first brush with fame came in 2007 when he reached the final of Austrian talent show Starmania, which is kind of like the X-Factor without the Simon Cowell influence. Wurst made it all the way to the final but eventually came in second to Nadine Beiler. who coincidently went on to represent Austria in the 2011 Eurovision, but only managed 18th place.

Eurovision 2014: Austria's Conchita Wurst Wins With 'Rise Like A Phoenix'

Austria has won the 2014 Eurovision Song Contest which was held last night (10th May) in Copenhagen. Conchita Wurst, a drag act, won the competition with her son ‘Rise Like a Phoenix’ which received 290 points.

Austria won by a considerably number of points. The Netherlands came in second with 238 points whilst Sweden obtained third place with 218. The British act, Molly Smitten-Downes came in 17th place with her song ‘Children of the Universe’. Molly gained 40 points and came in 17th out of the 26 countries in the final.
