Ethan Hawke's new thriller The Purge scared up a U.S. box office win over the weekend (07-09Jun13) after raking in a whopping $36.3 million (£23.4 million)

The horror movie, which is already in the green after recouping its $3 million (£1.9 million) production budget, surpassed Fast & Furious 6, which came in second with takings of $19.7 million (£12.7 million).

Now You See Me, starring Morgan Freeman and Mark Ruffalo, earned $18.9 million (£12.2 million) in its second week, while Vince Vaughn's latest comedy, The Internship, debuted at four ($17.8 million/£11.5 million)

Rounding out the top five was animated family film Epic, which features the voices of Beyonce, Pitbull and Amanda Seyfried ($12.1 million/£7.8 million).
