The psychological thriller, in which Emily Blunt plays an alcoholic divorcee trying to solve a murder she may be responsible for, took the fast track past its competition last weekend (07-09Oct16).

Based on Paula Hawkins' novel, and also starring Rebecca Ferguson, Haley Bennett and Justin Theroux, The Girl on The Train made $8.46 million (£6.95 million) on its debut in British cinemas.

The film also raced to the top of the North American box office on Sunday (09Oct16) with earnings of $24.7 million (£20.28 million).

Derailed from top spot after three weekends at number one is Bridget Jones's Baby, while Tim Burton's quirky kids' caper, Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children is third with $2.7 million (£2.22 million).

Real-life oil rig disaster movie Deepwater Horizon and epic Western remake The Magnificent Seven round out the new top five.
