Rock 'n' roll legend Elvis Presley made music history in Britain today (16JAN05), achieving the UK's 1000th number one single.

A re-release of the late rocker's 1959 hit ONE NIGHT soared straight to the top of the charts, just a week after his 1957 classic JAILHOUSE ROCK held the same position - today's achievement also gives Elvis his 20th UK number one.

But the King Of Rock's domination of the British charts may not have stopped yet - his record label are releasing 18 Elvis classics in consecutive weeks, to cash in before the 50-year copyright protection on sound recordings expires on his earlier hits across much of Europe.

British Elvis author and enthusiast SID SHAW says of his success, "He was the best and there'll never be anyone like him.

"He's as popular as he ever was, especially in Britain. There's something in his voice, his songs, his moves, you just can't forget him."

Elvis was given a good fight this week by Welsh band the MANIC STREET PREACHERS, whose single EMPTY SOULS reached the number two spot. The Killers' new single SOMEBODY TOLD ME came third.
