Sir Elton John has called for an end to violence against gay people following a spate of homophobic attacks in Ukraine.
The Rocket Man hitmaker performed at an Aids charity concert in capital city Kiev on Saturday (30Jun12) to coincide with the Euro 2012 soccer tournament, which is being co-hosted by the country.
In between songs he referenced newspaper reports of attacks on the gay community in the country, and made an emotional appeal for the violence to stop.
He said, "Recently I read about violence against gay people in Ukraine. Beating up gay people is wrong. This for me does not symbolise Ukraine. I plead with you: Stop the violence against gay people."
