SIR Elton John is determined to play a guardian role in the life of the little Ukrainian boy he hoped to adopt - his husband David Furnish insists the pair will be "like uncles" to the youngster.
The Rocket Man singer, who wed Furnish in a civil partnership in 2005, was devastated when his dream of playing parent to Lev, who he met in a Ukrainian orphanage, was dashed by a local law forbidding gay couples from adopting.
The couple still want to adopt in the future - but Furnish reveals they're happy just to play a role in little Lev's life.
He tells Britain's New! magazine, "We want to support Lev and his brother and get them into a Ukrainian home and out of the orphanage.
"We were upset not to be allowed to adopt but we'll fight and work with the Ukrainian government to change the law so that HIV positive children can be adopted. We'll be like uncles. They can visit us on holidays."
