The Rocket Man hitmaker, a prominent AIDS activist, attended the Senate subcommittee on global health to testify in support of the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) funding program, which was launched in 2003.

During his speech, he said,"The AIDS epidemic is not over and America's continued leadership is critical. There is a window of opportunity before us, a window through which we can very clearly see the end of AIDS within my lifetime, we cannot afford to let the window close."

Sir Elton also told BBC News he is confident the disease can be eradicated during his life, saying, "I sincerely believe that, if I didn't believe it, I wouldn't be sitting here today and I wouldn't be here canvassing the Senate and the Congress and the American government... We've got to keep our foot on the accelerator, keep the money coming and then get some more people to come to the party and talk about AIDS."
