SIR Elton John and his husband-to-be David Furnish have decided against adopting a child because the DON'T GO BREAKING MY HEART singer believes he is too old to become a first-time father.

John, who will marry next month (21DEC05), is full of praise for Canadian film producer Furnish's rapport with children and knows he would make a great dad.

But the prospect of raising a teenager when he's in his 70s is too much for John, 58, to agree to.

He tells Attitude magazine, "The only time we started talking about the difference in our ages was when we started talking about adopting a child. I said, 'Listen David, I am just too old for this.'

"I didn't want to be a 70-something with a teenage child and all the worry that entails. David is amazing with (kids), he has a very special way with them... But the thought of changing our lives to give kids a secret life and not be in the spotlight (was too much).

"We just agreed that, well, I'm way too selfish. I'm too set in my ways. I'll take the perks of being gay where I can get them and that's one of them for me: gay men are the only group of people who aren't looked down upon if they don't have kids."
