Tragic singer-songwriter Elliott Smith was given a fitting send off last night (03NOV03) when nearly 1,000 fans came together in Los Angeles to celebrate his life.

Stars including Beck, Beth Orton and Tim Burgess played Smith songs in front of 900 fans at Hollywood Boulevard's HENRY FONDA MUSIC BOX THEATER.

Many of the stars took the opportunity to pay their own tributes to the MISS MISERY star, who died of a self-inflicted knife wound last month (21OCT03).

Beck told the audience, "I'm really happy to have this chance to pay tribute to Elliott and his incredible music."

Orton said, "So this is a celebration of Elliott's life. I didn't really know Elliott as a person - I'm doing this more for what he's leaving behind."

The performances were recorded for a Smith tribute CD, proceeds of which will be donated to the ELLIOTT SMITH FOUNDATION FOR ABUSED CHILDREN.
