LATEST: The man suspected of shooting singer / songwriter MARC COHN during a carjacking has been charged with first-degree attempted murder.

JOSEPH WILLIAM YACTEEN stands accused of shooting the Grammy-winning WALKING IN MEMPHIS singer earlier this month (AUG05). He is said to have fired into the star's van in a parking garage in Denver, Colorado.

Cohn, who is married to US newswoman Elizabeth Vargas, spent only a day in hospital but was forced to cancel the remaining five stops of his tour with Suzanne Vega.

Police believe the bullet failed to kill the star because it was slowed down by the van's windshield and by Cohn's tour manager THOMAS DUBE, who was also treated in hospital after being grazed by the bullet.

Prosecutors allege that Yacteen - who remains in custody - was on the run from police after trying to pay a hotel bill with a stolen credit card.

Yacteen, 26, has also been charged with second-degree assault, two counts of attempted aggravated robbery, 12 counts of menacing, and two counts of first-degree criminal trespass. He faces up to 90 years in prison if convicted of all counts.
