Elizabeth Smart 's rep told People Magazine last month "I know they're looking at a summer wedding. They're still in the process of planning the wedding, and there are a lot of details to still be worked out;" ultimately that's proved to be somewhat wide of the mark, and the 24 year-old got married to her fiance Matthew Gilmour this weekend just passed, getting hitched at a small ceremony in Hawaii, reports ABC News.
Smart had apparently initially planned for a summer wedding, but the pair moved the date up to avoid media scrutiny. Speaking to People again, she said "It's everything you can imagine with planning a wedding. Only, it's compressed into a few days." Last month her father Ed had told the same publication of the family's excitement at the impending marriage, stating "We're very excited for her, she told us at home last Saturday. I wasn't really surprised. They've been very happy together. We're just thrilled. We're looking forward to her moving on to this next stage and leading a very happy life."
Smart first came to fame in 2002 after being kidnapped aged just 14 from her home in Salt Lake City. She turned up nine months later 18 miles away in the company of Brian David Mitchell and Wanda Ileen Barzee; initially unfit to stand trial the pair were eventually convicted in 2009 and 2010. Smart's case was widely reported with a film and book coming out off the back of it.
