Eddie Redmayne missed the BAFTA after-parties because he wanted to spend time with Stephen Hawking and his family.

The 33-year-old actor - who plays the acclaimed professor in 'The Theory of Everything' - was presented with the Best Actor prize at the event at London's Royal Opera House.

But rather than mixing with the other celebrities in attendance, Redmayne opted to socialise with Stephen and his first wife Jane Wilde - who was played by Felicity Jones in the film - at the Grosvenor House Hotel in central London.

Having won the BAFTA, Redmayne is looking forward to going away to a sun-drenched location with his new wife Hannah Bagshawe, who he tied the knot with in December 2014.

He said: ''I'm loving married life. The plan is to go and sit on a beach somewhere with Hannah.

''She certainly deserves it. That's the idea - get a few more freckles.''

Bagshawe, meanwhile, has spoken of her pride at her husband's recent success.

She told The Sun newspaper: ''I'm so proud, it's been such a special night. I did get a bit teary, I think we all did. He has promised me a holiday but I don't know where, somewhere relaxing where he can switch off.''
