Eddie Murphy is celebrating the milestone birthday of 50 today (3rd April 2011).

Eddie Murphy, star of Nutty Professor and the voice of Donkey in Shrek, was in attendance at the Kids Choice Awards last night in Los Angeles, at which he accepted the award for 'Favourite Voice in an Animated Movie.' He won the award for his character of Donkey in the latest Shrek film, 'Forever After.'

Accepting the award, the actor told the audience: "Thank you, thank you so much. Thank you for liking Shrek. This is like an early birthday present... tomorrow is my birthday." At which point he made the entire audience sing 'Happy Birthday' to him before finally leaving the stage, according to Digital News Report.

The actor is now working on his latest film Tower Heist, in which he stars alongside Ben Stiller, Matthew Broderick and Casey Affleck. The film is set for release in Autumn 2011.

It was recently announced that Murphy was honoured at this year's Comedy Awards with a Comedy Icon Award. The accolade reflects a life time of achievement for the comedian, who has enjoyed success in stand-up, film and in his infamous stint on sketch show Saturday Night Live. The ceremony, which took place at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York on March 26, will air in early April.
