Asylum Records is proud to announce 'Sing', the eagerly anticipated first single from Ed Sheeran set for release on June 1. The record is available to pre-order on iTunes now, after premiering across radio stations worldwide last night. 'Sing' is the first new music to be unveiled from the Suffolk native's forthcoming album "x", due out on June 23.
The new single was recorded in New York's Jungle City studios after Ed bumped into the song's producer Pharrell at the Grammy Awards. They exchanged details and soon after, they hit the studio. Ed says of the experience, "Pharrell really pushes you and wants you to do the best thing possible. So you don't go for the first thing he plays. Pharrell must have been on about his 17th idea when he played me this beat. I don't really get jazz chords and this felt like one of them. Instinctively, I dismissed it, but I had a guitar in my hand and started playing that riff absent-mindedly. From that moment, I was playing that song and. we just pieced it all together."
The result is a brilliant up-tempo track which reveals a new layer to the 23-year-old, whilst retaining his trademark song-craft. It is this incredible lyricism that earned Ed huge critical acclaim and massive sales success for his debut album "+", that saw him honoured not only with the highly prestigious Ivor Novello Award in 2012 for Best Song Musically and Lyrically for his debut single 'The A Team', but made him the most-nominated artist at the 2012 Brits, winning Best British Breakthrough and Best British Male.
Aged just 20, Ed Sheeran cemented himself into British music history in 2011 with the release of "+", which stormed the UK album chart at number 1. Achieving the highest first week sales for a male debut, it featured incredible, homespun songs that connected with an ever-expanding fan-base - songs such as 'The A Team', 'You Need Me, I Don't Need You', 'Lego House' and 'Give Me Love'.
Ed is back on UK soil after supporting Taylor Swift on her hugely successful Red Tour, which took him to every corner of North America. Playing 66 shows with Taylor, he swapped a life of sofa surfing for a year on the back of a tour bus. Delivering spectacular solo performances each night, he solidified stateside his reputation as an exceptional performer. His time in the US culminated with 3 of his own headline shows at New York's Madison Square Gardens, which sold out completely in just 3 minutes.
Later this year, Ed will embark on a headline nationwide tour of the UK/Ireland for the first time since the Autumn 2012.
