The animated movie, featuring the vocal talents of DWAYNE 'THE ROCK' JOHNSON and Nicole Scherzinger, has now taken its total domestic gross in North America to $145 million (£115 million) since its release in late November (16).

The family film holds strong at the top despite a big challenge from Office Christmas Party, which opens in second place with $17.5 million (£13.9 million). The festive comedy stars Jennifer Aniston, Jason Bateman, Olivia Munn, Kate MCKinnon and T.J. Miller, and is expected to build on its momentum in the lead up to Christmas.

Harry Potter spin-off Fantastic Beats and Where to Find Them slips one spot to three, while Arrival and Doctor Strange round out the new top five.

While Moana continued to make waves, it's unlikely to remain atop the North American box office chart for long.

Movie musical La La Land, starring Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling, only launched in a handful theatres across New York and Los Angeles this weekend (09-11Dec16), but fans flocked to check out the hotly-tipped Oscars favourite, helping it gross $855,000 (£680,330) on limited release. The early success sets a new record for a five-theatre opening with $171,000 (£136,070) per cinema, surpassing the previous best of $147,000 (£117,000) for The Master in 2012.

La La Land, directed by Damien Chazelle, expands to a wide release on 16 December (16), but it won't be the only big draw for film fans - Rogue One: A Star Wars Story also opens next week (begs12Dec16).
