The wrestler-turned-actor stars in the animated film as Polynesian demigod Maui, and his vocal skills are put to the test with tracks written by Hamilton composer Miranda.

While Johnson has previously put his impressive singing voice on display in multiple film and TV appearances, his collaboration with Lin-Manuel on Moana was nothing like he's ever experienced before.

Gushing about the Tony winner to USA Today, Johnson said, "He's a masterful artist who created this cool platform for me to express my character's bold sentiment through a song. I've sung before in some films I've made in the past and grew up in a musical family - I play guitar... - but singing and rapping a Lin-Manuel Miranda creation is above and beyond anything I've experienced."

"His writing style is extremely unique and pushes boundaries of rhythm and flow," he continued. "He's an assassin with lyrical wordplay which is why his music is so dope and complex. It's been an honour to collaborate with him. And what makes it an honour is because he's one of the good guys. Very gracious and humble with his success which tells me everything I need to know."

Moana also features the voices of Hawaiian teenager Auli'i Cravalho in the lead role, Nicole Scherzinger, Alan Tudyk, Flight of the Conchords star Jemaine Clement, and cameos by Lin-Manuel's former Hamilton co-stars Phillipa Soo and Christopher Jackson.
