Drew Barrymore made her directorial debut in America last night (21SEP04) when her politically-charged documentary THE BEST PLACE TO START aired on MTV.

The CHARLIE'S ANGELS star spent the last year travelling around America filming interviews with politicians and teenagers in a bid to grasp how politics work in the United States.

Her hour-long film was picked up by MTV bosses as part of their CHOOSE OR LOOSE programmes, aimed at encouraging young people to vote in the November (04) presidential election.

Barrymore was inspired to make the film by her own ignorance and something pal Russell Simmons told her when she confessed to him that she didn't think her vote was important.

She says, "We as young people vote in such low numbers and Russell Simmons told me that every one person's vote is as important as (billionaire tycoon) Bill Gates' vote.

"You realise how empowering that is and how equal we all are in the voting booth.

"I was a person who was totally apathetic; I didn't understand why it was important to vote; I didn't understand politics. The negativity drove me away.

"I spent the last year of my life trying to learn why voting is important and I realised it becomes about you, and learning who you are."
