Director and visual effects pioneer Douglas Trumbull is to be honoured with the inaugural Vision Award at the upcoming Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland.

The moviemaker will also host two special classes at the event, while films he has worked on - including 2001: A Space Odyssey and Silent Running - will be screened.

The Locarno Film Festival's artistic director Carlo Chatrian praises Trumbull as a "filmmaker, inventor and creator of visual effects that have haunted audiences' imaginations", as well as someone "who has always been ahead of the pack".

The event takes place in August (13).
