Billionaire American businessman Donald Trump wants to trademark the phrase "you're fired", as a result of his hugely successful TV show The Apprentice.

Trump, who uses the phrase to vote people off the new reality TV series, has filed a request to the US Patent and Trademark Office.

The 57-year-old - who amassed his fortune through owning key New York properties like the TRUMP TOWERS and the Atlantic City, New Jersey casino The TAJ MAHAL - has made the series into a major hit which is currently rivaling the likes of American TV smash Survivor.

The new reality show involves contestants competing for a real job within Trump's real estate corporation based in the Trump Towers.

At the end of each episode Trump tells one of the expectant candidates, "You're fired."
