A show by troubled rapper DMX sparked a "mini-riot" at New York's Back To School Jam this weekend (30SEP06) after a technical failure left him silent. The hip-hop star, real name EARL SIMMONS, was performing at the Nassau Coliseum to welcome kids back to school, but his set was plagued by sound problems which saw his microphone completely cut out. The frustrated rapper fumed, "F**k outta here with that, turn my s**t on," but even after sound was restored angry fans began pelting the stage with water bottles and food. Members of his entourage retaliated by throwing the objects back into the crowd. One concert-goer tells AllHipHop.com, "A mini-riot broke out, as you can imagine, when members of DMX's crew began firing items back into the crowd. One member (of DMX's entourage) jumped off stage into the crowd. "He jumped in his booth and proceeded to swing at him several times. I could hear those punches connecting." Police were forced to end the concert, cancelling a headline performance by DIPSET rapper JIM JONES. It's not the first time Simmons has courted controversy. Early this year (06) he spent a night behind bars for failing to attend court dates for a traffic offence. Last year (05), he served 70 days in jail for violating his parole following a 2004 incident in which he posed as an undercover federal agent and crashed his vehicle through a security gate at John F Kennedy International Airport in New York City.
