Run-DMC star Rev Run has paid tribute to late rap icon Larry Smith, calling him the "greatest hip hop producer of all time".

Smith, who co-produced the first two Run-Dmc albums alongside Def Jam founder Russell Simmons, has died, aged 63.

He produced albums by hip-hop crew Whodini, including their signature song Freaks Come Out at Night, and worked with Kurtis Blow.

Rev Run, aka Joseph Simmons, tweets, "(He) produced my biggest and most significant hits."
