Although Disney is delaying opening Toy Story 3 in most overseas markets until after the World Cup, the movie performed spectacularly well in the 25 countries where it was released, grossing $44.8 million. As it did in the U.S., the movie broke opening-weekend records in such countries as Mexico, China, and Argentina. (The film did not open in any European country.) The success of the film in Mexico, Brazil and Argentina, in particular, where interest in soccer has always been intense, suggests that the World Cup may not be the kind of box-office killer that some distribution executives make it out to be.
