The total box office for 2010 is expected to come in a tad below 2009's, but the result could have been an unqualified disaster if it had not been for 20th Century Fox's Avatar year-end estimated totals indicated Thursday. Although the film had already earned $284 million during December 2009, it went on to earn an additional $477 million in 2010, making it the biggest box-office hit of this year. " Avatar kept this year's [box office] totals afloat," Daily Variety remarked in a year-end summary of the year's biggest hits. And while Fox was unable to produce any other big blockbuster in 2010, Disney films wound up as the second and third most-watched movies of the year, as its Toy Story 3 took second place with $415 million and Alice in Wonderland placed third with $334 million. (Disney's Tangled has thus far raked in $150 million.)
