Leeds Festival 2013 - Preview

Leeds Festival has been a not-to-miss date in our calendar for years. Over the past few years the UK has seen many boutique and independent festivals pop up and more people appear to be getting their festival fixes from these smaller events, but they're never going to be able to provide what Leeds Festival does so well. Consistency! Sometimes it is a case of 'you get what you pay for' and Leeds is a perfect example of that. Sure, Leeds perhaps isn't for the more mature gig attendee, but it never has been. It's a weekend of fun and partying that sees thousands of music fans partake in the festivities.

Since its inception organiser Melvin Benn and the team at Festival Republic have known exactly who their audience is and catered for them, Leeds & Reading festivals now run as a well-oiled three day event that means everyone who's bought a ticket will have a great time. Even the toilets in the main arena are kept to a good level of cleanliness, far higher than most of our experiences at smaller festivals!

Set in one of the most ideal festival grounds in the UK, Bramham Park, the festival has a well laid out site plan and features plenty of bars and activities outside of the main arena to keep people occupied all through the day and night.

A Week In Music, We Catch Up With Diiv's Cole, Icky Blossoms Unveil Their Self-Titled Album And Cookie Monster Shows Restraint In Icona Pop Cover

Brooklyn band Diiv

A week in music videos... We caught up with Brooklyn band DIIV last week as they are currently enjoying the 2013 festival season. Talking to lead member Cole, he explained just how different it was playing festivals compared to club gigs, that it was more about coming into the world of the fans rather than bringing them into your own. He was also not shy about admitting that the pressure of working on a second album has lifted. 'People are gonna be way more patient and wanna hear what you come up with', he says. 'The first record you have to have a clear statement of purpose like a sound and catchy pop songs.' As well as taking the time to chat to us, we were treated with an uplifting live rendition of their song 'Human'. Watch the full interview here and watch the live video for Human.

With the release of their highly-anticipated sixth album 'Mechanical Bull' imminent, Kings Of Leon follow up the audio release of its first single 'Supersoaker' with a grainy, retro-style, artistically produced video. Just as we expected, 'Supersoaker' is made of the anthemic, driving and infectious stuff that previous international hits 'Use Somebody' and 'Sex On Fire' are made of and we certainly can't wait for what looks to be another well-loved record that will see us through the autumn. Watch the video for Supersoaker here.

Lollapalooza 2013: The Best New Bands Worth Checking Out

Lollapalooza Disclosure DIIV Smith Westerns Wilco Daft Punk Drowners Foals The Cure Phoenix Nine Inch Nails

You, being a seasoned festival-goer, will know that it’s Lollapalooza 2013 in Chicago’s Grant Park this weekend (August 2 – 4, 2013), which promises to play host to some of the biggest acts in the world as well as showcasing the most exciting and innovate new bands on the planet. And that’s what we’re here to concentrate on: the young, fresh and ready to impress.

It seems a long, long time since Disclosure’s first single Offline Dexterity, though the British electronic duo have gone from strength to strength in recent years and finally released their debut album, Settle, on PMR Records on June 2, 2013.It was met with both commercial and critical success, including a score of 9.1 from the notoriously picky musos at Pitchfork – no mean feat.

Sure, we’d rather see Disclosure in a club - perhaps in the early hours of the morning – though Lollapalooza-goers will have to settle for 6pm at The Grove, on Friday (August 2, 2013). Saying that, both Guy and Howard will be DJ’ing at The Mid club in Chicago’s West Town from 10pm on Friday.

Diiv - Human (Live)

Cole from Brooklyn rock band DIIV unveils a live performance of the band's single 'Human' brought to you by Contactmusic and Festival Fever and taken from their debut studio album 'Oshin' which was released in 2012 on the Captured Tracks label.

In the video, band founder Zachary Cole Smith, known informally as Cole, introduces the track and says, 'I wrote it about life' before immediately getting lost in his own dreamy singing and uplifting riffs. We also got sucked into the performance, which was mainly guitar-driven with minimal but stunningly mellow vocals and certainly got us into the festival mood. A perfect tune for relaxing in the summer sun.

Cole was originally part of the indie rock band Beach Fossils before embarking on a new project in Diiv, which was originally named 'Dive', after the 1992 Nirvana track, and enlisting guitarist Andrew Bailey, bassist Devin Ruben Perez and drummer Colby Hewitt. Continuing their festival dates, this year will see them play at one of America's biggest and most loved music festivals, Lollapalooza, where they will share the The Grove stage with the likes of Wavves, MS MR, Azealia Banks, 2 Chainz and Lana Del Rey. They will also hit Canada's Osheaga Festival and the UK's Leeds Festival.

Diiv - Video Interview

We here at Contactmusic have teamed up with Festival Fever to chat to Brooklyn-based dream-rock band DIIV as they, and we, embark on the summer festival season.

We caught up with the band's founder Zachary Cole Smith to chat about everything from the differences between festivals and club shows, the pressures of a debut album compared to a second and working with his musician girlfriend Sky Ferreira.

'Festivals are fun because it's just a completely different environment', Cole muses. 'When you play at a club show, people come and they're like coming into your world. This is my club, I create the mood... But in festivals it's opposite. We are bands coming into your world.' He also frankly admitted to us that recording a sophomore album lets the band be more at liberty creatively. 'People are gonna be way more patient and wanna hear what you come up with', he says. 'The first record you have to have a clear statement of purpose like a sound and catchy pop songs.'
