Denzel Washington has donated $1 million (GBP500,000) to a Marshall, Texas, college in a bid to help the school re-establish its debate team. The Oscar winner's new movie, The Great Debaters, is based on the life of poet and educator Melvin Tolson, who coached Wiley College's elite all-black debate team in the 1930s. Washington recently expressed his desire to see the art of heated discussion back on the school curriculum - and the actor hopes his generous gift will help to encourage the college's modern teachers and professors to start up new classes on the social skill.
