Recovering alcoholic Dennis Hopper allowed himself to descend into a drink-fuelled nightmare because he was convinced it was normal behaviour.

Hopper, who has been sober for two decades, admits he fooled himself into believing he was only doing the same thing as his friends.

He says, "I've had 20 years of sobriety from hard narcotics and alcohol but in those days I was a nightmare.

"I thought everyone drank. I thought everybody was like I was and I was in total denial."
