The Cool for the Summer star, who has been open about her own personal struggles in the past, has thrown her support behind non-profit organisation Facing Addiction by sharing the charity's short video, which seeks to end the stigma surrounding addiction, on

"I am one of the 1 in 7 people (in America) who has faced addiction, and I am grateful to be in recovery today," she wrote in the accompanying caption.

"It's time for us all to reflect, and start @facingaddiction," she continued. "Let's stop ignoring the biggest problem in our country we often don't want to look at. We all are connected to this issue one way or another and we all need to be part of the solution. Together we can replace shame with support, hope, and healing."

Demi has previously come clean about her struggles with substance abuse, self harming, and eating disorder problems, which prompted her to first seek help in rehab in 2010, at the age of 18.

The star, who also suffers with bipolar disorder, frequently credits her longtime boyfriend Wilmer Valderrama with helping to keep her on the path to sobriety, after almost relapsing in her eating disorder battle in 2013.

She isn't the only celebrity to back the Facing Addiction campaign - model Tara Conner and comedian Gary Owen have also shared the short Instagram video online and offered a few words about their own addiction battles.
