Dance Music Star Deadmau5 Has Filed A Multi-million Dollar Lawsuit Against His Former Manager Over The Release Of New Remixes.
The DJ, real name Joel Zimmerman, cut ties with singer/producer Melleny Brown in 2008 after a lengthy bid to get out of his contract.
In their 2008 settlement, Zimmerman gave Brown ownership of musical compositions and sound recordings he had made until that point, on the condition he would be asked for permission if they were used in future remixes, but Brown has allegedly breached the deal.
In the complaint, filed in Toronto, Canada on Monday (26Oct15), the DJ's lawyer writes, "The defendant (Brown) has released sound recordings... without obtaining the express prior written consent of Zimmerman. Those sound recordings are not of good technical and commercial quality, and have tarnished Zimmerman's brand, causing damages to Zimmerman."
He also claims the releases infringe his trademarks.
Deadmau5 is suing for breach of contract, infringement of moral rights, false endorsement and punitive damages, and he wants $10 million (£6.3 million) for each track and an injunction preventing further distribution.
