General Hospital took three of the top acting accolades, including Outstanding Lead Actor for veteran Anthony Geary, Outstanding Lead Actress for Maura West, and Outstanding Supporting Actor for Chad Duell.

The Young and the Restless also received acting prizes, including Outstanding Supporting Actress for Amelia Heinle and Outstanding Younger Actress for Hunter King.

The programme tied for the top award of Outstanding Drama Series with Days of Our Lives, which also won Outstanding Younger Actor in a Drama Series for Freddie Smith.

Days of Our Lives, the longest-running scripted series on America's NBC network, was given a special recognition for its 50th anniversary and many of its past and present cast members took to the stage for a bow.

Rounding up the drama categories, The Bold and The Beautiful won two prizes for Outstanding Directing and Writing Team.

Comedian Steve Harvey won the title of Outstanding Talk Show/Informative for the second year in a row, former late night chat show host Craig Ferguson earned the honour of Outstanding Game Show Host for his new programme Celebrity Name Game, and American footballer-turned-TV presenter Michael Strahan won his first Emmy with his Live! with Kelly and Michael co-star Kelly Ripa for Outstanding Talk Show/Entertainment Host.

Comedienne Ellen DeGeneres, whose self-titled chat show won its fifth Outstanding Talk Show/Entertainment at the ceremony, kicked off the prizegiving by putting an end to her prank feud with Today Show host Matt Lauer after two months of friendly practical jokes.

In a pre-taped video, Lauer's body from the neck down was replaced with a muscular, half-naked man wearing black lingerie and tights, and he "agreed" to pay $1,000 (£625) to charity for everyone who thanks him in their acceptance speech.

Throughout the night, nearly 15 winners acknowledged Lauer in their speeches.

In addition, veteran TV star Betty White was feted with the Lifetime Achievement award, which was presented to her by friends Marie Osmond, Regis Philbin, Fred Willard, Charo, and Tom Bergeron.

Upon accepting the prize, White told the crowd, "I cannot tell you what this means. I have been in this business for a long time, you may not have noticed that. But when I started in 1949, I had no idea that would still be around... it's thanks to you and your mothers and fathers and grandmothers and grandfathers and a couple of great-grandfathers from when I was younger."

Late comedienne Joan Rivers' daughter Melissa also made an appearance to pay tribute to her mother and others in the daytime television community who lost their lives over the past year.

The Los Angeles event was hosted by supermodel/reality TV star Tyra Banks.
