The former Doctor Who star applied for permission to add an extra storey to his family's home in Chiswick, west London to accommodate his growing brood, following the birth of his third child with his actress wife Georgia Moffett in November (15).

The proposal faced heavy opposition from locals and conservation groups, and Tennant even made a public plea for approval at a community meeting in November (15), but his attempts failed to change the minds of officials at Hounslow Council.

They rejected his application last week (ends13Dec15), ruling that raising the roof of the Victorian villa to add a third storey would "harm the historic and architectural character of the site".

Tennant and Georgia married in 2011, and he adopted her son from a previous relationship.
