Movie maverick David Cronenberg has opened up about the car crash tragedy that wrecked the beginning of his Scanners shoot in 1980, insisting the double fatality would have ended most young filmmakers' careers.
Two motorists collided when one slowed down to watch highway filming of the thriller, and cast and crew had to drop everything in a desperate attempt to save lives.
He tells The Hollywood Reporter, "They slowed down, and the guy behind them didn't. My grip jumped over the fence and pulled the woman out of the car, but they were dead, and that was our first day of shooting.
"I thought if I could survive that, I could survive anything."
