Queen Elizabeth II formally accepted the former Conservative Party leader's resignation on Wednesday (13Jul16).

Cameron announced his decision to step down after the British public voted to leave the European Union in a referendum last month (Jun16).

Before resigning, Cameron stated that serving as Prime Minister for six years was "the greatest honour of my life" in his last speech outside 10 Downing Street in London.

Standing with his wife Samantha and their three children, Cameron added, "As we leave for the last time, my only wish is continued success for this great country that I love so very much."

Theresa May has accepted the Queen's invitation to form a new government after stepping in to replace Cameron.
