Rocker David Bowie has been revealed to have snubbed a royal honour, as a list of 300 people who turned down awards has been leaked.

According to a secret Whitehall file obtained by British newspaper THE SUNDAY TIMES, the JEAN GENIE singer refused a CBE in Queen Elizabeth II's birthday honours of 2000.

Other celebrities from the past 40 years to have refused the honours include celebrity cook Nigella Lawson, artist David Hockney, children's writer Roald Dahl, actress Honor Blackman, actor Trevor Howard and Albert Finney, who turned down a knighthood in 2000 and a CBE in 1980.

Film director Alfred Hitchcock also refused a CBE in 1962, but reportedly accepted a knighthood just before he died in 1980.

An inquiry to find the source of the leak is now under way.
