Intense illusionist David Blaine left a London press conference today (01SEP03) dripping with blood after a new trick appeared to go wrong.

The American star, famed for his street trickery and endurance stunts, was promoting his new project - being suspended in a small box above the British capital's River Thames for 44 days - when one of the assembled journalists asked whether he had any new tricks.

Blaine responded by borrowing a penknife and cutting his ear - but the magician yelled out in pain as he made an incision, before leaving the room trying to stem the flow of blood with a handkerchief.

The 30-year-old returned to the conference with his ear and shirt covered in blood.
