Sixties star Darlene Love will sing her festive rendition of Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) on U.S. Tv on Friday (19Dec14) for the final time after 28 years.

The veteran singer traditionally performs her signature song on the last broadcast of David Letterman's late-night chat show before it breaks for Christmas, and she has fulfilled the duty almost every year since 1986.

However, Letterman is retiring from hosting The Late Show next year (15), and Love's rendition on Friday night will be the final time she sings the song on the programme.

The show's bandleader Paul Shaffer says, "I'm looking forward to it this year more than any other year, with mixed feelings, of course. It's been incredibly meaningful for me."

Love first performed the song for Letterman when his show was on the NBC network in 1986, and she has returned almost every yuletide since then, singing it 21 times, but is adamant she puts in little preparation for the big moment, saying, "I just show up and sing the song."

Letterman will be handing the reins of The Late Show to Stephen Colbert in May (15).
